According to the latest data published Wednesday, Android continues to lose ground to iOS in terms of U.S. smartphone market share.

In the 4th quarter of 2012, the popularity of Apple’s iPhone 5 helped the iOS platform grow its smartphone market share by 3.5% domestically.

Apple’s gain came as a loss to Android.

For the 3 month average ending Jan. 2013 vs. the 3 month average ending Oct. 2012, Apple secured 37.8% of smartphone subscribers. Android’s lead, however, slipped to 52.3%, as Apple continues to make gains at Android’s expense with each passing quarter.

129.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (55 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in January, up 7 percent since October.
