Strategy Analytics is out with a new report spotlighting the large volume of mobile devices shipped last year.
Based on the data presented, it appears that global mobile phone shipments grew 2% year-over-year to reach 1.6 billion units in 2012.
Leading the pack was Samsung, which accounted for 1 in 4 of all mobile phones shipped globally last year. For the calendar year, Samsung shipped a record 396.5 million mobile phones worldwide.
Nokia’s global mobile phone shipments fell 20 percent from 417.1 million units in 2011 to 335.6 million in 2012.
Not surprisingly, Apple had a banner year, shipping a record 135.8 million mobile phones worldwide in 2012 (46 percent annual growth).
“Ongoing macroeconomic challenges in mature markets like North America and Western Europe, tighter operator upgrade policies, and shifting consumer tastes were among the key reasons why global mobile phone shipments grew just 2 percent annually…” says Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics.
