More Enterprises Going Mobile as 2016 Looms LargeThe thirteenth Good Mobility Index Report was release this week and it shows that organizations are increasingly going mobile.

Jumping out in the report from the BlackBerry owned company is that more organizations than ever are now building custom secure apps.

Among Good (Powered by BlackBerry) customers who are building custom apps, the average organization has developed 3.74 custom apps to help mobilize key business processes.

More broadly, the report summary notes, the calendar Q3 report showed a 30 percent quarter-over-quarter increase in app activations and an increase in the number of organizations using multiple apps beyond email.

“The Q3 Good Mobility Index Report validates that enterprises are moving forward to the next stage of their mobility journeys,” said Billy Ho, Executive Vice President of Enterprise Product and Value Added Solutions at BlackBerry. “The ability for organizations to develop compelling, secure cross-platform mobile applications using the Good Dynamics platform is one of the key benefits that made the acquisition of Good so important to our strategy.”

The Good crew says a free webinar detailing findings in the Q3 2015 Good Mobility Index Report will take place on December 2, 2015. Want to register? Click here.

Blackberry Takes a Bow in Response to Top MMA HonorsThe Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) in Indonesia has just bestowed an industry award recognizing the growing strength of BBM as a mobile advertising platform in the country.

“BlackBerry Limited, a global leader in secure mobile communications, has been named Publisher/Media Company of the Year in Mobile — winning a prestigious Industry Award at the 2015 Mobile Marketing Association (MMA)’s Indonesia ‘Smartie’ awards,” notes a Blackberry post this week.

The MMA is a leading global non-profit trade association representing the mobile marketing ecosystem, charged with accelerating the transformation and innovation of marketing through mobile. The MMA Smarties Awards is the world’s only global mobile marketing awards program honoring innovation, creativity, and success in the mobile sector.

“This award is important for BBM, because it shows the mobile marketing and advertising community recognizes how successfully we have transitioned BBM from its roots as a chat application, creating a true ecosystem that brings together social, ads, content and commerce,” said Matthew Talbot, SVP of BBM at BlackBerry. “We are a new kid on the block when it comes to media and advertising — but from turning on our first direct Native Ad last July and then Video in September this year, we are now generating more than one billion ad requests per day.”

Rohit Dadwal, Managing Director, Mobile Marketing Association Asia Pacific Limited, echoed that sentiment.

“We’re delighted that the jury nominated and selected BBM as an Industry Award winner in the mobile publishing and Media Company field,” said Dadwal. “Mobile is the most compelling, accurate, and inclusive marketing practice today. We look forward to watching BBM continue to evolve as a leading mobile marketing platform.”

Blackberry logoBlackBerry recently announced that St. Louis County Emergency Management has selected AtHoc, a division of BlackBerry, to provide a “highly secure alerting and personnel accountability solution.”

All told, it’s further evidence of BlackBerry’s growing interest in the critical communications and public safety space.

“The selection and deployment of the AtHoc solution was made in preparation for the one-year anniversary of the shooting and consequent demonstrations that gripped the streets of Ferguson in August 2014,” the BlackBerry announcement reads.

St. Louis County EMA sought a state-of-the art crisis communication system that would enable swift, secure and reliable critical communications.

“We designed our system to be both powerful to use as well as rapidly deployable,” said Jim Hoppe, AtHoc’s Vice President of Commercial and SLED. “We are proud that both of these attributes contributed to the safety of the Saint Louis County citizens in their first use of AtHoc, the same proven technology used by the Department of Homeland Security for the protection of their own personnel.”

A Very 'Good' Thing Just Happened to BlackBerryAhead of the long holiday weekend, BlackBerry confirmed its latest acquisition and it could come as a boon to connected healthcare professionals struggling to juggle communications platforms and mobile devices across numerous platforms.

BlackBerry said ahead of the weekend that it has signed an agreement to acquire Good Technology for $425 million in cash.

The acquisition of Good is aligned with BlackBerry’s strategy to offer customers the most complete, end-to-end solution that secures the entire mobile enterprise, across all platforms. Enhanced by Good, BlackBerry will expand its ability to offer a unified, secure mobility platform with applications for any mobile device on any operating system – supported with security that has been certified by governments around the world embedded in every component of the mobility infrastructure.

“By acquiring Good, BlackBerry will better solve one of the biggest struggles for CIOs today, especially those in regulated industries: securely managing devices across any platform. By providing even stronger cross-platform capabilities our customers will not have to compromise on their choice of operating systems, deployment models or any level of privacy and security,” said John Chen, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO. “Like BlackBerry, Good has a very strong presence in enterprises and governments around the world and, with this transaction, BlackBerry will enhance its sales and distribution capabilities and further grow its enterprise software revenue stream.”

What's In a Name Ask BlackBerry As It Nabs Two New Domain Names as Android Rumors Roil“BlackBerry Ltd, which has been coy about its ambitions to make a mainstream Android smartphone, fueled more speculation about its plans this week when it scooped up two Android-related domain names.”

That’s the scoop from a recent story by Reuters.

What gives?

Basically, a few blog posts in the last few days discovered that the Canadian handset maker bought the domain names “AndroidSecured.com” and “AndroidSecured.net.”

That’s all it took to boost rumors that Blackberry intends to build a device powered by Google Inc’s Android platform, the juice behind the vast majority of smartphones sold worldwide.

“The purchase of the domain names is particularly interesting since BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen has declined to confirm a June Reuters report that said the company was planning an Android phone,” reported Reuters. “Speculation that BlackBerry will embrace Android was also spurred this week by a Digitimes report that said the company plans to roll out several models of Android-based phones.”

Chen, however, has been quoted more than once as saying he would go Android only if he can “secure Android.” And it tamped down speculation related to the domain names, saying “BlackBerry frequently registers domain names to support the breadth of our cross-platform portfolio. Android is an important part of our cross-platform enterprise software strategy.”

And yes, “AndroidSecured.com”, currently redirects users to a BlackBerry enterprise-focused site.

“But that has not stopped a barrage of chatter on tech blogs about the purchases being part of BlackBerry’s plan to build its own secure Android, going beyond supporting existing Android phones on its BES12 device-management system,” says Reuters. “BES12 allows corporate and government clients to secure Android-, iOS-, Windows- and BlackBerry-powered devices on their networks.”

Fact is: analysts and tech gurus believe a move to Android could give BlackBerry’s device arm a new lease on life.

What will happen? We’re not sure. But we’re watching this like a hawk.

BlackBerry and Typo Reach Settlement on Controversial iPhone KeyboardTypo — an iPhone keyboard that looks strikingly similar to the iconic BlackBerry keyboard design — has reached a settlement with BlackBerry.

BlackBerry, of course, has been battling the team at Typo and tangling in court over Typo’s purported infringement on BlackBerry’s familiar keyboard design.

But this week, the battle came to an end. And BlackBerry won.

As part of the settlement, it has been agreed that Typo keyboards will be permanently discontinued from being sold anywhere in the world (this pertains to keyboards for smartphones and mobile devices with a screen size of less than 7.9 inches).

Typo and its partners, however, may continue to sell keyboards for devices with a screen size of 7.9 inches or larger.

Other terms of the settlement, BlackBerry says, are confidential.

BlackBerry Boosting Mobile Content Security, Enterprise CollaborationOn Tuesday, BlackBerry announced its acquisition of WatchDox, a move designed to further enhance what BlackBerry calls its best-in-class mobile security and give enterprises unmatched control over their files even after data leaves the corporate network.

“WatchDox’s technology will be offered as a value-added service that complements BlackBerry’s Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) portfolio, and will be available with BES12, a multi-OS EMM solution,” BlackBerry explained in an announcement shared with MMW.

Financial terms have not be disclosed at the time of this writing.

The addition of WatchDox will extend BlackBerry’s commitment to help organizations securely connect employees with each other and with corporate information across all mobile and desktop platforms. BES12 is the foundation for BlackBerry’s extensive portfolio of enterprise security, productivity, and communication and collaboration services.

John Chen, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO, says that this acquisition “represents another key step forward as we transition BlackBerry into the premier platform for secure mobile communications software and applications, supporting all devices and operating systems. Together with last year’s Secusmart acquisition, Samsung partnership, our own internal development efforts, and now the acquisition of WatchDox, we now have capabilities to secure communications end-to-end from voice, text, messaging, data and now enterprise file-sync-and share.”
