New M2M Alliance Takes Aim at AsiaWith cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) connections in Asia expected to  more than triple in the coming years, local wireless operators have “banded together” in a group dedicated to facilitating M2M deployments in the region, says IHS in a new report.

The installed base of wireless M2M connections in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region will rise to 109.0 million in 2017, up from 32.6 million in 2012, according to IHS Technology (NYSE: IHS). By 2017, Asia-Pacific is set to be the second-largest regional M2M market, behind only Europe in total cumulative cellular M2M connection volume.

In January, IHS researchers say, eleven operator members of the Bridge Alliance in the Asian-Pacific region formed the Bridge M2M Alliance. The group was chartered to “promote the growth of cellular M2M services in APAC.”

The 11 founding Bridge M2M Alliance operators provide connectivity to more than 570 million mobile subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Bridge M2M Alliance will specifically address market inhibitors unique to the Asia-Pacific region.

“There are some fundamental structural challenges to the growth of multinational M2M deployments in Asia-Pacific that don’t impact other regions to the same extent,” said Bill Morelli, associate director of M2M & Internet of Things at IHS. “These problems include an overabundance of cellular air standards, major geographical barriers, and highly divergent market dynamics in different countries. The Bridge M2M Alliance could play a key role in overcoming these issues and enabling the region to attain its growth potential.”

GSMA Projects 2014 Spike in M2M ConnectionsThis week, the GSMA published a new report calling for the number of global machine-to-machine (M2M) connections to reach a quarter of a billion this year.

The latest projection, the GSMA says, underscores that M2M has become a “major growth area for mobile operators.”

The study finds that global M2M connections reached 195 million in 2013, growing at nearly 40 per cent per year (38 per cent CAGR) between 2010 and 2013.

M2M accounted for 2.8 percent of all global mobile connections at the end of 2013, double the 1.4 per cent share recorded in 2010.

“We are now living in a world where every device, machine or appliance can be wirelessly connected to the internet, providing a wealth of real-time information that can transform how people live and work. For mobile operators, connecting ‘machines’ to their networks is now a major focus area,” says Hyunmi Yang, Chief Strategy Officer at GSMA.

“But it is not just about adding new types of connections: there is an opportunity for mobile operators to add value far beyond connectivity by developing M2M capabilities that reduce fragmentation and stimulate new services,” Yang adds. “For example, defining cross-vertical solutions in network APIs, device management, security and big data are areas where operators can help drive the M2M market forwards.”

M2M Connections Projected to Reach 2.9 Billion Within Ten YearsThe growth of machine-to-machine (M2M) connections will be nothing short of remarkable over the next deacem according to the latest industry projections.

A new study from Strategy Analytics – “M2M Connections by Industry Vertical and Bandwidth” – predicts M2M connections will grow from 368 million in 2013 to 2.9 billion by 2022.

Of those connections, we’re told, 78 percent will be on 3G or faster networks by 2022.

Key factors such as M2M platform evolution, application and analytics developments, regulation as well as the creation of new business opportunities and avoiding obsolescence are all factors driving M2M to an expected growth in connections of 23 percent CAGR growth between 2013 and 2022.

“Regulation has always been a key driver pushing M2M forward, whether it’s the emergence of the ACA (Obamacare), or smart metering initiatives in Europe or China,” asserts Andrew Brown, Director of Enterprise and M2M research at Strategy Analytics.

Brown is also the author of the study.

“However,” he adds, “it is also the investment from industrial giants like GE and pressure from ‘kick-starter-funded’ companies pursuing ‘over-the-top’ initiatives for the ‘Internet of Things’ that are providing the impetus and competition that will also help customers find an increasing range of relevant, tailored solutions.”

Cellular Will Drive Majority of M2M Connectivity Revenues by 2018ABI is out with a new report calling for M2M connectivity to be embedded in more than 2 billion devices across nine key industries by 2018. But it will be cellular that will bring the “bulk of the value and the connectivity revenues.”

ABI Research has examined the demand and appeal for M2M connectivity across cellular, satellite, fixed-line and short-range wireless technologies within nine key industry verticals. Each technology has specific advantages and appeal, but cellular is the best placed to deliver the most value, hence revenues, for the connection.

Expectations expressed in the report indicate that industries including Automotive, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Retail, Security, Energy and others will all add connectivity to devices and products in a bid to improve efficiency, cut costs, and improve customer service.

“Looking at demand for connectivity, while cellular will not have the highest number of connections, or the highest average revenue per connection, it will provide the greatest opportunity to drive the most overall value from those connections,” says Jonathan Collins, principal analyst and author of the new report.

ABI The Big Business of Big Data and AnalyticsABI Research is out with a new forecast which calls for the M2M analytics industry to grow a “robust” 53.1% over the next 5 years from $1.9 billion in 2013 to $14.3 billion in 2018.

The forecast includes revenue segmentation for the five components that together enable analytics to be used in M2M services: data integration, data storage, core analytics, data presentation, and associated professional services.

“Analytics will play a critical role in the evolution of M2M, serving as the foundation for an increasing number of M2M business cases,” says senior analyst Aapo Markkanen.

“In essence,” Markkanen adds, “such analytics-driven business cases will be about making previously opaque physical assets part of the digital data universe. M2M has thus a very synergetic relationship with the wider big data space, with growth in one industry driving also growth in the other.”

Significantly, the actual value of M2M data can vary greatly by the depth of delivered analysis, ABI explains in this morning’s report.

“At the moment,” the research firm summarizes, “most enterprises with relevant data assets are trying to migrate from descriptive and diagnostic insights to predictive analytics. Mastering the predictive phase could then ultimately lead to the final, prescriptive phase of analytics.”

M2M services to Reach 31 billion by 2017New data and corresponding projections published Wednesday from Infonetics Research are raising eyebrows with regard to the forecasts presented for machine-to-machine (M2M) connections and services by technology, vertical, and geographic region.

“M2M is one of the fastest-growing major new segments for service providers,” says analyst Godfrey Chua, who directs Infonetics Research’s M2M and Connected World program. “We forecast global revenue from M2M services to more than double between 2012 and 2017, from just under $15 billion to $31 billion.”

Other M2M market highlights from the new report include:

  • There were nearly 1.4 billion M2M connections worldwide in 2012, with PAN wireless technologies comprising the vast majority
  • Making up just under 190 million connections today, M2M connections via cellular and other WAN wireless technologies are projected to nearly triple by 2017, becoming the largest growth engine for operator revenue
  • More than 16% of total M2M service revenue, almost $2.4 billion, is derived from M2M “backhaul” services
  • The automotive, transport, and logistics sector made up 1/3 of total M2M service revenue in 2012, driven by vehicle tracking, navigation, and delivery applications
  • North America and Europe are the key centers of M2M service growth, together accounting for 72% of the total market
  • In 2012, China Mobile overtook AT&T in M2M connections leadership, but AT&T remains the revenue leader due to higher ARPC (average revenue per connection)

“What’s often overlooked about M2M is that it will be delivered to the world by way of a portfolio of access technologies,” Chua adds. “Cellular networks represent the most meaningful revenue opportunity for operators, but by far the most popular way to connect to M2M services is via PAN (personal area network) wireless technologies, such as WiFi, Zigbee, Bluetooth, and IP500, which do not generate connection revenue. It’s critical that mobile operators incorporate a broader view of the various M2M access technologies into their M2M strategies.”
