The 11th annual Evening Before event, held in September of 2017, celebrated the television industry’s premier talent in support of The Motion Picture Television Fund (MPTF).

In addition to premiere talent, the event included top companies who produced creative activations for guests to enjoy during the event, including Ford Motor Company.

MMW has learned that Ford Motor Company and Augmently Inc. teamed up to creatively highlight augmented reality’s singular ability to showcase brands in unique and interesting ways.

Ford challenged Augmently Inc. to create an activation that would educate and introduce the esteemed guests to the venerable automaker’s substantial sustainable vehicle line.

The result was an impressive AR marketing success that even managed to create hype in a town already buzzing in anticipation of TV’s biggest night.

To pull it off, Augmently Inc. conceptualized a “Ford Tattoo Parlor” to showcase Ford Hybrid Electric Vehicles in an environment that looked and felt exactly like a pro ink shop.

Augmently Inc. crafted five unique temporary tattoo designs, one to symbolize each of the five sustainable vehicles in Ford’s EV fleet. The tattoos featured butterflies, a green earth, daisies and other imagery symbolic of sustainability and eco-friendly automotive engineering.

Once a guest selected their design of choice, the tattoo artist helming the shop would tell them about Ford’s electric vehicles while applying the temporary tattoo that led to what would surely become a permanent memory.

With the tattoo in place, the AR portion of the experience began as Ford’s tattoo artist waved an iPad over the design, making it come to life straight off the skin.

Each unique AR experience was recorded and emailed to the tattoo recipient as a sharable video.

To see how it all came together, check out this exclusive look at the AR experience shared below.

By the admission of many in attendance, the AR tattoo booth was among the most unforgettable experiences of Emmy’s weekend.

“We’ve had this concept for an AR event for over a year and a half,” says Augmently Inc. Founder and CEO Ziggy Kormandel. “When we connected with the Ford team, I knew it was a perfect match. And the lingering buzz is bound to inspire more brands to put skin in the game of augmented reality.”

Move Over Apple, Ford Motor Company Drives Home Point About Being GreenMaybe it does take a car company known by its blue oval logo to gravitate to green.

Because becoming more environmentally responsible is what colors Ford’s current world.

In a new infographic from Salt Lake City, Utah’s most respected Ford dealership, Henry Day Ford, you can see that the company has made great strides in upping the eco-value of its rides.

For instance, in 2011, the typical Ford vehicle emitted 0.91 metric tons of greenhouse gasses. But in a span of just two years, Ford achieved a remarkable drop in those emissions to less than 0.78 per vehicle.

It’s all part of Ford’s plan for reducing vehicle waste by 40 percent by the year 2016.

You can learn more about it in the visual shared below.

Ford May Be Sitting on a Digital Marketing Goldmine in Response to The Safety of its VehiclesAccording to a forthcoming digital marketing report from a leading global research firm, marketers in the automotive industry must understand one thing as 2015 looms on the horizon: safety sells.

Although the new report isn’t set for publication until February, MMW received a sneak peek. And the results show that auto makers that tout the safety of the vehicles in their digital marketing could see an enormous spike in sales in the coming years.

And few auto makers are in a better position to do that (with new or older model vehicles) than Ford.

Ford — in case you haven’t heard — has been “tearing it up” in a very good way. While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has continued to raise the bar for automotive manufacturers that want to achieve five-star safety ratings, Ford has devoted the time and effort it takes to score well in the rankings. From the Ford Fusion to the F150, Ford is becoming known for its engineering excellence.

Let’s take a look at three Ford offerings — recommended to us by the experts at Henry Day Ford, which has been studying and selling Ford vehicles in Utah since 1934. The company believes the 2014 Ford Focus Electric, 2013 Ford Fusion, and 2013 Ford F-150 typify the automaker’s commitment to safety superiority.

The 2014 Ford Focus Electric

What auto recently zoomed through each of the NHTSA’s three safety tests with flying colors? That would be the 2014 Ford Focus Electric. The two gas-powered models of this auto received an overall rating of four stars in both front and rollover tests, but the Electric brought home top honors with a coveted five-star rating. It’s a tad costlier than its gas-powered cousins, but benefits include beefed up features as well less expensive operational costs. Another advantage: the Focus Electric can qualify consumers for both federal and local incentives offered for buyers of electric vehicles.

The 2013 Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion received five stars less than a year ago for its stellar performance in rigorous NHTSA tests. One reason? The auto’s eight airbag system made it a crash test titan. Designed to provide enhanced protection for all vehicle occupants (seat-mounted side air bags that deploy lower in the pelvis area, as well as the chest region, and new venting technology to bolster side-impact protection), the car also features reverse cameras, an adaptive cruise control system, and a blind-spot information indicator that helps keep passengers safe and secure.

The 2013 Ford F150

Last, but definitely not least, is the F150. One of the stars of Ford’s F-Series of full-size pickup trucks, it has been a bestseller since 1948. In fact, it has been the top selling vehicle in the U.S. for more than three decades. There are good reasons why. Consumers gravitate to the F150 for its power and performance, but it’s no slouch when it comes to safety. It’s the truck with a four-star rating — a hard-earned honor for modern pickups. This truck has been touted as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and continues to be an A-list choice.

Ford Remains a Big Driver of Innovative Automobile MarketingIt’s unlikely that Henry Ford, the iconic American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company, could have envisioned a time when his visionary vehicles would be promoted on small mobile devices, throughout robust social networks, and across a vast digital marketing landscape.

But Henry Ford and his team have always been innovative marketers, even in what now harkens back to relatively ancient times in the world of advertising.

Fifty years ago, Ford famously sliced and diced a new Mustang convertible and sent it in pieces up an elevator to the top of the Empire State Building before it was reassembled and displayed for the world to see.

Well, what worked one-half century ago may work again. This time around, the venerable automobile maker will adorn the Empire State Building with a 2015 Mustang in celebration of the sweet ride’s 50th anniversary.

For Ford, however, this marks just the latest in a long lineage of marketing brilliance that spans the board room to the dealership. Today, many Ford dealerships – including those that have been around for 80 years – are garnering a reputation for being the most tech-savvy and forward-thinking in the automobile industry.

Family owned and operated since 1934, West Valley City’s Henry Day Ford is one of Utah’s top Ford dealerships. But it’s also one of the most respected for reasons that extend beyond the customer service and satisfaction generations of car shoppers have enjoyed. Their digital marketing and sales prowess are second to none.

As Digital Journal reported earlier this week, customer are given an opportunity to virtually test drive a number of new model vehicles through the Henry Day Ford website, which is fast-becoming a feature that countless dealerships across the U.S. are scrambling to offer.

“Want to check out the 2015 Ford Explorer SUV?” the report asks. “Just a few clicks will take you inside the vehicle for a comprehensive look at the model that provides everything but the new car smell.”

Since the start of 2014, Ford has dazzled the automotive world with more than just its usual far-sighted marketing. It’s penchant for cutting-edge technology has been off the charts in recent months as well.

As MMW reported in January, Ford Motor Company’s AppLink SDK is resonating with developers at a high speed. By that time, more than 1,000 software devs had already signed up for the program that was officially rolled out at this year’s CES.

Despite how new the program is, the incentive for developers to get on board is clearly strong, especially in light of the fact that Sync AppLink services are supported in hundreds of thousands of Ford vehicles like the Ford Expedition, Fusion, F-150, Focus, Mustang, E-Series and more.

“The Ford Developer Program marks a dramatic shift in how we will innovate new features and add value to our vehicles throughout the ownership period,” said Hau Thai-Tang, vice president of Engineering, Ford Global Product Development. “Opening the car to developers gives consumers a direct voice and hand in the creation of apps that can help our products remain relevant, up to date and valuable to our customers.”

It seems like that’s also the goal with Ford’s marketing.

Today in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress 2013, Ford revealed a new partnership with Spotify.

As a result, owners of Ford models with SYNC AppLink will soon be able to access Spotify’s catalog through voice activation using its smartphone app.

“We’re targeting the first quarter of this year,” said Douglas VanDagens, the director of Ford’s Connected Services division, when asked about the service’s launch through this new partnership.

Reuters confirms that the deal marks Spotify’s first collaboration with an automaker.

Music services like Spotify and Pandora Media Inc are striking partnerships with automakers to make their music available to drivers, especially as Internet access improves in vehicles.

Spotify currently has 20 million active users and 5 million paying subscribers across 20 countries. As of this writing, Spotify contends that approximately 20 million songs are available through the platform across all markets.

Ford is the first automaker in the world to launch an open developer program that enables software developers to directly interface with the vehicle and create apps that will enhance the driving experience.

Ford says that a recent Frost & Sullivan study shows one in five survey respondents acknowledge using apps while driving with absolutely no connection to the vehicle. That reality is poised to change in the wake of Ford’s impressive efforts to to change forever how we travel the open road.

CES 2013 isn’t even underway yet and we’re already navigating the open floodgates of tech news regarding mobile apps and their increasing integration with the automobiles we drive.

On Monday, mobile tech company Glympse Inc. announced the first location-sharing app for Ford Motor Company’s SYNC in-car connectivity system.

What does that mean exactly? Here’s what Glympse and Ford tell us: Using the AppLink interface, drivers will be able to share their location with friends and family directly from their car using simple voice commands, eliminating the need to touch their mobile phone while driving.

“People typically share their location while in the car, and by integrating Glympse into Ford SYNC AppLink, we’re providing drivers with a rich, real-time and hands-free way to share where they are,” says Bryan Trussel, co-founder and CEO of Glympse.

To use Glympse, drivers need the app installed on an iOS or Android-based smartphone. The car automatically recognizes the app when the phone is Bluetooth-paired or USB-connected.

With Glympse activated, drivers simply need to press the SYNC voice button on the steering wheel and say, “Send Glympse.” Users can send a Glympse to a friend’s email or mobile number, or to Facebook and Twitter.

Pretty nifty, huh?

“At Glympse,” Trussel touts, “We’re dedicated to creating a more robust connected car experience, and working with Ford will help us to reach millions of consumers who will be able to just say, ‘Send a Glympse’ to share their current whereabouts, eliminating the need to send a text or make a phone call.”

Usually, that which happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. But not this week. In fact, the news coming out of Tuesday’s kick off to the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show will quickly transverse the globe and make tech headlines in every major publication on the planet.

So what is everyone expecting out of CES this year? Perhaps the bigger question is what isn’t everyone expecting out of CES this year?

For starters, it’s the biggest CES in convention history. In fact, the Consumer Electronics Association says the 2013 show will cover 1.87 million net square feet of exhibition hall space.

“With the largest show floor in history, more innovative technologies and services will launch at the 2013 CES than anywhere else in the world,” says Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association. “From cloud-based services, advancements in digital health, connected vehicle technologies, the latest apps, flexible devices and beyond, the innovations unveiled at the 2013 CES will create new jobs and further economic growth around the world.”

Among the biggest product categories expected to dazzle this year are – not surprisingly – cameras, TV’s, and cell phones. But a “record number of automakers” are scheduled to make an appearance at the show, which has raised eyebrows ahead of the convention kickoff. Audi, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, and Subaru – all carmakers than have fiddled with mobile technology in the past – will cover more than 100,000 net square feet of exhibit space.

“Cars are becoming rolling computers,” said Tom Coughlin, a consumer electronics consultant and member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. According to Coughlin, automobiles are becoming “mobile application platforms” rather than just simple transportation vehicles. Based on the chatter ahead of tomorrow’s CES kickoff, the automobile-related revelations out of this year’s show could, in fact, steal the show.

While there will be no shortage of major news coming out of Las Vegas this week, all eyes will first turn to the CES 2013 opening keynote, which for the first time in a decade, won’t be delivered by the CEO of Microsoft. Paul Jacobs, Qualcomm’s CEO, now has the honors. And expectations are high.

What are your expectations from CES 2013? Please weigh in with a thought or comment below. And, as always, MMW will bring you all the latest news and gossip as they emerge from Sin City.
