Global Mobile Data Traffic Increasing at Record PaceThe newest projections from Cisco call for worldwide mobile data traffic to increase nearly 11-fold over the next four years and reach an annual run rate of 190 exabytes by 2018.

The projected increase in mobile traffic is partly due to continued strong growth in the number of mobile Internet connections, such as personal devices and machine-to-machine (M2M) connections, which will exceed 10 billion by 2018 and be 1.4 times greater than the world’s population (the United Nations estimates 7.6 billion people by 2018).

Putting some of these gargantuan numbers into perspective, the Cisco VNI Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast’s annual run rate of 190 exabytes of mobile data traffic for 2018 is equivalent to:

  • 190 times more than all Internet Protocol (IP) traffic, fixed and mobile, generated in 2000; or
  • 42 trillion images (e.g., multimedia message service or Instagram)—15 daily images per person on earth for a year; or
  • 4 trillion video clips (e.g., YouTube)—more than one daily video clip per person on earth for a year.

“The incremental amount of traffic being added to the mobile Internet just between 2017 and 2018 is 5.1 exabytes per month,” Cisco summarizes, “which is more than three times the estimated size of the entire mobile Internet in 2013 (1.5 exabytes per month).”

On Monday, Epom – a global ad serving and ad management solutions provider – issued a press release about its new Epom UniMobile service. If you’re not familiar, the service lets users monetize non-mobile optimized sites.

In a nutshell, Epom UniMobile technology enables the ability to run mobile ad campaigns on display sites and profit from a mobile audience.

One of the unique features that distinguish our service from others is its simplicity of integration and management. Every time the desktop web site gets mobile hits, visitors will see mobile ads. It only takes a few minutes to place the code at the bottom of the desktop web site and start to run ads.

According to details contained in this morning’s announcement, Epom Market accepts web sites that are non-optimized for mobile but have a “good share” of mobile traffic.

Best of all, we’re told the code doesn’t influence the websites performance and doesn’t increase the page load time.

“As magazine and news publishers put more emphasis on mobile, the tools and platforms designed to draw more advertising dollars into the medium are increasing as well,” says company CEO Anton Ruin. “However, major advertising networks aren’t eager to accept sites which are non-optimized for mobile. We are launching technologies that will be helpful in mobilizing these sites, which in turn will help them become monetizing sites. Epom is pushing forward in becoming a leader in providing these services for them.”

Apple’s iPhone 5 has taken the lead from the Samsung Galaxy S III, at least in terms of mobile traffic generated since Apple raised the curtain on the iPhone 5 last month.

On Monday, Chitika Insights published the findings of its comparison of Web usage rates of the newest phones from both manufacturers.

To quantify our latest study, we conducted a user agent analysis on millions of mobile ad impressions, spanning a 7-day time frame from October 3rd through October 9th, 2012. Looking solely at impressions coming from the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III, we were able to observe the difference in Web traffic volume between the two devices.

After just 18 days on the market, Chitika says, the iPhone has overtaken the Galaxy S III in the critical race for top Web traffic volume. This is a particularly impressive feat when you consider that the Galaxy S III has been available in the U.S. for nearly four months already.

It’s a bold and eye-opening prediction from the folks at Cisco in their Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast for 2011 to 2016.

Within the five year period outlined, worldwide mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold, reaching 10.8 exabytes per month — or an annual run rate of 130 exabytes — by 2016, Cisco says.

The expected sharp increase in mobile traffic is due, in part, to a projected surge in the number of mobile Internet-connected devices, which will exceed the number of people on earth (2016 world population estimate of 7.3 billion; source: United Nations). During 2011-2016 Cisco anticipates that global mobile data traffic will outgrow global fixed data traffic by three times.

So just how much is an annual run rate of 130 exabytes of mobile data traffic? Here’s what that’s equivalent to:

  • 33 billion DVDs.
  • 4.3 quadrillion MP3 files (music/audio).
  • 813 quadrillion short message service (SMS) text messages.

Among the leading trends to drive these significant increases are more streamed content, more mobile connections, enhanced computing of devices, faster mobile speeds, and more mobile video.

According to Cisco, mobile video will comprise 71 percent of all mobile data traffic by 2016.

News of the former Destiny’s Child singer’s own forthcoming child nearly gave Twitter a social media heart attack Sunday, as the microblogging platform saw a record influx of tweets after the recording superstar dropped word of her burgeoning baby bump.

Beyonce’s announcement prompted Twitter users to crank out a staggering 8,868 Tweets per second. By comparison, news of Osama bin Laden’s death last May only saw 5,106 Tweets per second.

The beautiful songstress revealed her pregnancy at the MTV Music Video Awards. Following her performance at the show, Beyonce lovingly rubbed her belly, a move that subsequently sent Twitter into overdrive.

But Beyonce wasn’t the only social media mover of the night. In fact, MTV saw record social media engagement not to mention online viewership of the event (2.3 million video streams).

Additionally, MTV.com drew its biggest VMA audience ever while MTV’s mobile site logged its single biggest day on record, chalking up some 2.7 million mobile views.

MTV called Sunday’s award show “the most social VMA day ever.” And the social media and online viewing analytics back up the claim.

Thanks to the flurry of web traffic born of the recent major sporting events that have captivated the world’s attention, Twitter has seen an explosion in the number of “tweets” logged on a daily basis.

As a result of the hype surrounding both the World Cup and the NBA Finals, Twitter quickly set a new record for most tweets posted per second – a record that wouldn’t stand for long until it was promptly shattered yet again.

On an average day, users collectively tweet about 65 million times – that amounts to roughly 750 messages per second. But in the moments immediately following Japan’s big score against Cameroon, Twitter was the place to which soccer fans turned to post a staggering 2,940 posts per second.

Incredibly, that overwhelming statistic was outdone last Thursday immediately following the Los Angeles Lakers’ hard fought victory against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. For that occasion, tweets were coming at a lightning pace of 3,085 posts per second.

The trend of exploding tweets, however, had already begun long before the NBA Finals and the World Cup. According to comScore, Twitter.com saw better than 90 million unique visitors in May. That represents an increase from 83 million in April and only 37 million in May of 2009.

As unbelievable as that sounds, a survey by Omniture shows that nearly 71% of companies do not track mobile-based traffic to their websites- with half admitting to not even knowing how many unique users visit their sites from a mobile device.

We’ve stated how important it is to have a viable mobile presence, especially now, but to not even know the traffic coming in from mobile devices is downright embarrassing. Â Traffic stats and analytical data are key in forumulating a plan to optimize a mobile website, and with today’s consumers using mobile faster than ever, companies who don’t participate are losing big time.

“This intelligence from mobile traffic can be used to optimise website content for mobile users and fine tune mobile marketing efforts. These activities will help to keep visitors on the site longer, which can help to increase conversion rates,” stated Neil Weston of Omniture- speaking of the study. Â

Companies could very well be counting traffic that comes from mobile devices as traffic coming from traditional sources, which negates the whole reasoning behind website analytics in the first place. Â If a company figured out that a significant portion of visits are coming from mobile devices, they could formulate a plan to optimize their mobile website to convert those visitors instead of having no idea what’s going on.

It’s an impressive statistic, but then again, overall “mobile readiness” or the lack thereof has always surprised me.
