The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Verizon will offer unlimited data plans when it launches the iPhone on its network.
The nation’s largest mobile operator is expected to formally unveil the Verizon iPhone tomorrow, January 11th at the company’s media event in New York.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected – but not confirmed – to attend and possibly address the assembly of tech reporters during the presentation by Lowell McAdam, president and chief operating officer of Verizon Communications.
It is widely anticipated that Verizon will provide the same uncapped data plans for the Verizon iPhone that it now offers users of other smartphones on the Verizon network.
It wasn’t clear how long Verizon would offer unlimited-data plans. Its executives have said repeatedly that the industry needs to move to some form of tiered pricing—charging different prices for different amounts of data use—as mobile Internet service use rises, but for the moment the carrier is sticking to its existing plans.
Gearing up for an epic battle in the mobile space, AT&T fired the first shot on Sunday when senior vice president of corporate communication, Larry Solomon, told Business Insider that “the iPhone is built for speed…but that’s not what you get with a CDMA phone.”
Suggesting that the iPhone works faster on AT&T’s network, Solomon stated the he’s “not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane.”
AT&T, however, has consistently confronted consumer criticisms relating to the iPhone’s performance on the carrier’s overburdened network since 2007, when the Apple smartphone exclusively debuted on AT&T in the US.
