Following a long weekend of rumors, a spokesperson for Apple has just confirmed reports that the iDevice maker has acquired Israeli 3D sensor firm PrimeSense.
Although financial terms weren’t verified publicly, sources close to the deal confess the acquisition may have cost Apple close to or slightly more than $360 million.
PrimeSense is a successful maker of sensors, specialized silicon and middle-ware for motion sensing and 3D scanning applications.
The company’s infrared motion tracking technology can even be found in Microsoft’s Kinect sensor, which is used with the Xbox 360.
These days, Apple continues to pour money into Israeli tech firms. PrimeSense is Apple’s second acquisition in the region in as many years. Most recently, Apple absorbed flash memory component maker Anobit in 2011 in a deal valued at $400 million.
After the Anobit purchase, Apple expanded operations in the Middle Easy by adding research and development centers in Ra’anana and Haifa.
