Twitter is aquiring companies faster than it takes the average person to tweet whatever is on their mind.
This week, the microblogging juggernaught announced its second substantial acquisition in the mobile space for the month of April. Twitter is buying messaging infrastructure provider Cloudhopper.
From the Twitter Blog: “Twitter was inspired by SMS and we continue to embrace this simple but ubiquitous technology.”
Twitter’s relationship with Cloudhopper, however, is far from new. For the last eight months, in fact, Twitter has worked with the startup firm to become “one of the highest volume SMS programs in the world.” As it presently stands, Twitter processes nearly one billion SMS tweets on a monthly basis from every conceivable nook and cranny on the planet. Having Cloudhopper in the fold will only help Twitter further its reach across the global social networking landscape.
Twitter’s acquisition of Cloudhopper comes almost immediately after the social networking giant similarly announced the acquisition of Atebits, the developer of the popular Tweetie client for the iPhone – now aptly titled “Twitter for iPhone.”
