MMW learned ahead of the weekend that JCM Global will host a two-day, live esports tournament during the upcoming Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, giving attendees a chance to see and learn more about esports in-person and up-close.

“Esports is a global phenomenon and is slowly making its way into the casino industry. However, there are operators, regulators, and even some suppliers, who still need more information how esports works. That is why we are hosting this live esports tournament – to help G2E attendees connect with and gain a better understanding of this gaming spectacle,” said JCM VP of Marketing Tom Nieman.

Esports consultants Spawn Point is producing the event, which will feature 16 nationally ranked players from the Las Vegas area.

The competition takes place Tuesday, October 3 from Noon to 4 p.m., and Wednesday, October 4 from Noon to 4 p.m., with the final round taking place 3:30 p.m. The entire event is staged in the Esports Arena in JCM’s booth #4039. G2E takes place October 3-5 at the Sands Expo Las Vegas. The event will also be live casted on Twitch TV, extending the viewership to Twitch’s global audience.

“Our goal is to enable integrated resorts and racetracks to harness the energy and excitement of esports,” says Spawn Point Co-Founder Kevin Mercuri. “Esports is more than a new entertainment option, it’s a powerful channel by which casinos and racetracks can attract an entirely new generation of players. This live demonstration at G2E will help attendees gain a direct understanding of this emerging opportunity.”

mwcMMW has learned that the world’s largest esports company, ESL, is once again partnering with the GSMA, the organizer of Mobile World Congress.

The reasion for the pairing? To bring esports competition to MWC in Barcelona, Spain next week.

ESL Barcelona presented by Mobile World Congress is taking place on February 19 – 21, 2016, the weekend prior to the main event, and will host two esports competitions at Fira Barcelona, Hall 2.
“Connecting esports tournaments to events such as the prestigious Mobile World Congress is a very exciting new step as we work to further popularize esports – especially given mobile’s increasing importance as a gaming platform,” says Sebastian Radu, Managing Director of ESL Spain and ESL LATAM.

“Reaching new audiences, engaging them in new way, going to places yet to be discovered – that’s what the partnership between the GSMA and ESL is about,” Radu adds. “ESL Barcelona presented by Mobile World Congress is already our third joint event, and with it’s location in a burgeoning esports territory like Spain, we’re confident the future is bright and full of opportunities for both the GSMA and ESL.”

Sports Goes Mobile: theScore Launches ‘Ultimate Mobile eSports Experience’The first-to-market multi-game eSports app is moving to center court.

A leading mobile sports company, theScore, Inc., takes the trophy for being the first major sports media company to launch a dedicated mobile app for eSports.

“TheScore eSports seamlessly combines mobile-first breaking news, live scores, stats, push alerts, and links to video highlights and streams from across the world of eSports and competitive video gaming,” a statement provided to MMW reads.

Available to download for free now in Google Play, theScore’s eSports coverage can also be accessed at www.thescoreesports.com, as also on Facebook and Twitter. A theScore eSports iOS app is coming soon, according to the company.

“TheScore eSports delivers breaking news and live scoring coverage of League of Legends (Korean, North American, European and Chinese leagues) as well as real-time news coverage of Dota 2, Counter-Strike: GO, Call of Duty, StarCraft II and Hearthstone. Coverage of more games and regions will be added soon,” notes the statement.

Today, eSports is experiencing phenomenal growth. Industry analysts say the “digital fan base” now rivals that of mainstream sports leagues. Estimates are that 71 million people worldwide take in eSports.

“The many millions of eSports fans worldwide deserve a first-class, professionally supported mobile app, and that’s exactly what theScore eSports gives them,” said John Levy, Founder and CEO of theScore. “In our view, eSports should be treated as a fully-fledged sport and theScore eSports mirrors the same dedicated mobile-first approach we’ve taken with our flagship mobile sports platform.”

A win-win for sports and gaming? Yes, say industry observers.

“The launch of theScore eSports is a huge development for the world of eSports,” said Rod Breslau, a 13-year veteran journalist and broadcaster of competitive gaming and eSports. “Creating an awesome mobile experience like this is the natural next step in the enormous growth of competitive gaming.”
