Samsung Electronics America Inc. has just announced an exclusive U.S. marketing and retail partnership with Xbox to utilize Samsung’s flagship premium lineup of QLED TVs as the official 4K TV partner for the Xbox One X.

If you’re not familiar, the partnership kicked off at E3 2017 in June as attendees experienced, for the first time ever, “true, breathtaking 4K HDR gaming on Xbox One X and Samsung QLED TVs.”

Gamers will be able to experience the power of Xbox One X on QLED 4K TVs at various Xbox and Samsung marketing and retail activations throughout the US. Consumers will also see a custom Samsung TV spot showcasing Xbox One X and QLED together that will run nationally around the launch of Xbox One X this fall.

“The arrival of true 4K UHD gameplay on Xbox One X this Fall gives gamers the perfect reason to upgrade their television,” said Eddie Combs, Vice President of Marketing for Samsung Electronics America. “If gamers are looking for a TV that delivers premium 4K HDR picture quality with industry leading design and smart functionality, then the QLED TV and Xbox One X are an unbeatable 4K gaming combination.”

“Xbox One X will bring true 4K gaming to console players for the first time with 40 percent more power than any other console,” added Mike Nichols, Corporate Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Xbox. “Samsung’s QLED 4K TV is our favorite way to play Xbox One X, and we’re thrilled to join forces with Samsung in the U.S. to deliver immersive 4K gaming experiences to our fans.”

'AOL On' Lands on Apple TVOn Tuesday morning, Apple TV owners gained four new additions to the streaming line-up on their set-top box.

Freshly added to the platform are ABC News, PBS Kids, Willow, and – most significantly – AOL On.

AOL On is a network that delivers nearly one million videos to Apple TV. Despite the fact that most of the clips are short (the majority of vids are derived from an array of AOL properties like Huffington Post, TechCrunch, etc.) the content is still rich and of value to many viewers.

ESPN and even The New York Times are also providing content – more lengthy pieces, we’re told – to AOL On.

Although Apple TV is being lauded for the new additions, the company didn’t necessarily do anything too terribly innovative by adding AOL On to the mix. Prior to Apple TV, AOL On was already available on Roku, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and Amazon Fire TV, to name a few.

All Things D reported Monday that Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment unit, is on his way out of the division that largely focuses on Xbox and the company’s gaming endeavors.

Where is Mr. Mattrick headed? To Zynga, it appears.

These sources added that the high-profile executive is also close to taking a top job at Zynga, the troubled online social gaming company, possibly as its CEO and working in close partnership with its founder and current CEO Mark Pincus.

It should be noted that the market seems to have responded favorably to the rumors so far this afternoon.

According to a subsequent update to the original report, Zynga shares spiked nearly 10 percent to $3.05. Although that’s still 68 percent lower than where the company was during its 2011 public offering, a bounce is a bounce. And Zynga will take what it can get.

“If it happens,” author Kara Swisher writes, “the hire would be a massive one for Zynga, which has been hit by a series of problems since its IPO. Pincus has been struggling to move the company into mobile quickly, as its once strong Web and Facebook consumer business has waned. That has included a recent round of layoffs, as well as closures of a number of offices outside of its San Francisco HQ.”

Following months of speculation as to what Microsoft’s next-generation video game console would look like, the company behind the venerable video game brand finally answered our burning questions today.

On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the “Xbox One,” its next-generation voice-controlled video game console.

The Xbox One, which will be available later this year at a price to be announced, will also be the first platform to release the next installment in Activision Blizzard Inc’s blockbuster shooter franchise, “Call of Duty”.

According to Microsoft, its first gaming console in eight years delivers ample exclusive video and software content, not the least of which is a new “Halo” series produced by Steven Spielberg.

Already advertised as the ultimate gaming and entertainment hub, Microsoft is clearly taking aim at rival entertainment platforms being cultivated by Apple and Google.

“The world’s largest software company also sees the Xbox One as a broader strategic piece in the battle with Apple Inc, Google Inc and others to control consumer entertainment in the age of tablets and smartphones,” Reuters reports.

What’s your first impression of the Xbox One?

Wouldn’t it be fascinating to learn which brands have the most loyal fans on Facebook? On Wednesday, we gained some insight into that search. This morning, LoudDoor introduced “Brand Satisfaction,” a new dashboard powered by over 1 million monthly survey responses.

Billed as the “largest market research of its kind,” Brand Satisfaction tracks every major brand on Facebook and how likely fans are to recommend those brands to others.

Brand Satisfaction provides marketing and insights professionals with access to hundreds of demographic, behavioral and attitudinal details about audiences they follow.

For its first study, Brand Satisfaction compiled millions of responses from Facebook Fans of over 15,000 Facebook pages to determine the Top 20 brands with the most loyal Fans.

The top 20 looks like this:

  1. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
  2. Facebook
  3. Google
  4. Walt Disney World
  5. ALDI USA
  6. Xbox
  7. Starbucks Frappuccino
  8. Google Chrome
  9. Duncan Hines
  10. Adobe Photoshop
  11. Tim Hortons
  12. Hershey’s
  13. In-N-Out Burger
  14. Dove Chocolates
  15. NFL
  16. Portillo’s
  17. BRAVO
  18. Disneyland
  19. Dollar Tree
  20. AMC Theatre

“Demographic and behavioral data is the cornerstone to understanding a brand’s Facebook audience and powering game-changing marketing decisions,” says David Guy, CEO of LoudDoor. “Rather than relying on highly subjective social chatter or experimental ‘listening’ technologies, Brand Satisfaction does the hard work of asking brands’ Fans directly about their attitudes, behaviors and motivations. We then package this powerful data in a simple dashboard interface to empower brands to harness their Facebook asset.”

Are you surprised by any names on the list?

For any adult today who was a video gamer in the early 1980s, news of Atari’s demise will tug at the heart a bit.

On Monday, following a memorable thirty-year run, Atari filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Without question, gaming industry analysts say, the rise of mobile gaming – along with cutting edge video game systems like PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, etc. – has left the venerable Atari brand somewhat out of date. And despite having created groundbreaking games for the industry – games like “Pong” and “Asteroids” – Atari has been plagued by financial problems for years.

Fortunately for the company’s fans, however, Atari isn’t folding it in by any stretch of the imagination. According to the L.A. Times:

Its leaders hope to break the American business free from French parent Atari S.A. and in the next few months find a buyer to take the company private. They hope to grow a modest business focused on digital and mobile platforms, according to a knowledgeable person not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Representatives for Atari are yet to speak publicly on the bankruptcy filing.

It sounds like the plot of a really bad James Bond movie. But, in real life, such a development may actually be a welcome one for digital media and Internet junkies who consume more YouTube content than traditional broadcast television programming.

According to a new report published this week, YouTube’s apparent goal is to take over all outlets through which we consume content: mobile devices, desktop computers, and now good old fashioned television sets.

To achieve this objective (pay attention, Mr. Bond), YouTube “has been refining its video player for connected TVs, with more of a focus on continuous playback of channels that users have subscribed to.”

According to Ryan Lawler of Tech Crunch, YouTube is looking to provide ways for viewers “to navigate through its video library on their mobile devices, and then allowing them to beam the videos that they want to watch to the TV.”

It does this through mobile device pairing, which it introduced on Google TV devices and the PlayStation 3 and Xbox game consoles earlier this year. But pairing is coming to a lot more devices soon. At CES, YouTube will be showing off mobile pairing with a number of new devices from manufacturers such as Bang & Olufsen, LG, Panasonic, and Sony.

Based on what we’re told, YouTube similarly expects to deliver the feature to a wide assortment of other devices in 2013, including those made by the likes of industry heavyweights Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, and Western Digital.

Should this actually happen, millions of people all over the world will gain instant access to YouTube videos and channels from the mobile app on their TV.

Got that, 007?

So what do you think of YouTube’s purported plans for significant market penetration in the new year and beyond? Please weigh in with a thought or comment below.

According to a new slate of rumors surfacing from sources close to Microsoft, the tech giant is allegedly planning to give Apple a challenge in the set-top TV box department.

Based on the chatter we’re hearing, the Xbox brand is what will be used to give Apple this anticipated challenge.

This allegedly “affordable” system will serve up all the features you would expect. It will deliver access to Xbox entertainment services and video gaming.

“The device will run on the core components of Windows 8 and support casual gaming titles rather than full Xbox games typically found on a dedicated console,” The Verge reports. “Although hardware specifications aren’t fully locked down, we understand Microsoft will use a chipset to enable an “always on” device that boots quickly and resumes to near-instant access to TV and entertainment devices.”

When contacted about the rumor in question, a representative for Microsoft said the following:

“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”
