Those of you bummed that the NBA Championship games are over: Well, there’s always the LG National Texting Championship.
The contest, held by LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., seeks to find the fastest thumb in America. Or rather, the fastest thumb who uses an LG QWERTY keyboard to send SMS messages. Clever! LG gets to promote its full-keyboarded-handsets in the ever-competitive smart phone space, worth the expense of footing airfare to New York for finalists and their companions, giving a free LGenV2 phone to all finalists, and and offering a $50,000 prize to the texting winner.
The finals happen July 9, with contestants selected based on several different preliminary rounds. Most interesting is the “SMS Wild Card Play,” happening from today through next Wednesday, in which finalists have to be ready to receive a text message at time, of any length. They must reply as well as retype the message as quickly as possible.
What I like most about the Wild Card Play is that it further proves what savvy marketers knew all along–that SMS is ideal for time-sensitive information since it reaches consumers no matter where they are or what time of day it is.
Talk about an engaging SMS marketing campaign!
