While this likely comes as no surprise, new data out from comScore show that Android’s dominance in the US continues to grow — and now accounts for nearly half of all smartphones nationwide.
According to the measurement firm, Android closed out September with 44.8 percent market share, up 4.6 percentage points since June 2011. In comparison, Apple’s iOS gained only .8 percentage points over June, rounding out to 27.4 percent of the U.S. smartphone market. Mirroring results from the last couple of years, the gains in Android and iOS usage are offset by continued declines in market share by RIM, Windows Phone and Symbian.
RIM now accounts for 18.9 percent market share, declining 4.6 percentage points since June. In addition, Microsoft fell .2 points to 5.6 percent of the market and Symbian now commands 1.8 percent of the smartphone market — down .2 percent since June.
