Google has made yet another acquisition – and this one was quieter than most.
Over the weekend, SageTV – a tech outfit known for producing products that help implement content streaming services, was acquired by Internet search giant Google.
At this time, there’s no official word on how much Google paid for the company, which has been successfully manufacturing its popular DVR software since 2002.
What remains to be seen is how Google plans to put the company, its resources, and technologies to use. Of course, the rumor mill is already spinning.
As Don Reisinger of CNET commented Monday, “one possibility is that the service will be integrated into Google TV. That platform, which launched last year, allows people to search all their TV content, as well as access streaming services, such as Netflix and Pandora. However, not everyone is convinced that SageTV will be coming to Google TV.”
For now, Google isn’t talking. And neither is SageTV.
In a blog post Saturday, SageTV would only reveal that its company’s ideas will now “reach an even larger audience of users worldwide on many different products, platforms, and services.”
“As the media landscape continues to evolve, we think it’s time our vision of entertainment management grows as well,” the SageTV blog concluded.
