App Downloads Top Ten Billion for Apple

Well, that didn’t take long.

Just days after launching its countdown clock to the the ten billionth app download from its popular App Store, Apple announced over the weekend that one lucky individual hit the download milestone and, consequently, won a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

What was the 10 billionth app downloaded?

Paper Glider was purchased by Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK.

“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years-a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone-the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

“The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet,” Schiller added, following the announced download milestone.

Although the App Store launched mid summer of 2008 with only five-hundred applications, the content pool inside the digital download destination has grown significantly. Today Apple’s App Store boasts 300,000 free and paid mobile applications.

Only six months ago the App Store reached 5 billion downloads.
