Zombies Running Wild In Apple App Store

It’s not even Halloween yet and already we’re being overrun by “zombies,” particularly inside of the Apple App Store.

That may sound like an Apple-inspired horror flick, but it’s all too real for many mobile app developers lost in the cluttered iOS shuffle.

With the App Store now home to more than 650,000 iOS apps, it’s pretty obvious that most of those apps will never see the light of day when compared to the most popular offerings in the digital storefront.

A recent study discovered that as many as two-thirds of them (about 400,000) are considered “zombie” apps, or apps that are unranked in search, virtually invisible to App Store users and thus, virtually un-downloaded. This was discovered by an analysis from Adeven using it Apptrace tool.

“The reality is there are only a couple of thousand apps that really make some kind of downloads,” Adeven CEO Christian Henschel tells Insider Monkey. “This is based on Apple’s closed system — it’s tough to discover those kinds of apps. You don’t have proper search, so the only way to discover new apps is through the top listing.”

If you’re an iOS developer, does this “zombie” wonderland discourage you from creating apps for the App Store? Please weigh in with a thought or comment below.
