Chalk it up as a first for Tozny, which has built a secure, privacy-preserving and password-free mobile authentication system.

The company has just announced the launch of InnoVault, a so-called “easy-to-use toolkit allowing developers to embed end-to-end data security encryption capabilities into their websites, apps, or software.”

As a result, developers can now raise the level of their data security and privacy management to National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) recommended standards – without the need for security expertise, reads a statement provided to MMW.

InnoVault is built on Tozny’s E3DB technology that was developed as part of a 2-year collaborative agreement with NIST. The underlying technology is used by pilot partners under the NIST agreement to secure private data being generated within transit systems, smart buildings, and medical devices. InnoVault packages the E3DB technology for easy use by developers and is available with both free and paid tiers.

“The rise of data breaches exposing sensitive personal data such as passwords, emails, contact information, or location demands a more comprehensive data security than what most mobile and web applications use today,” said Isaac Potoczny-Jones, Founder and CEO of Tozny. “By providing developers with straight forward encryption tools, Tozny is addressing data security at the code level across a broad range of applications, such as registration forms, health records, IoT sensor data, and HR software.”

MWC 2016When Mobile World Congress commences Monday, virtual reality may easily dominate the deluge of tech headlines to emerge from Barcelona.

“If you want to truly gauge the impact of virtual reality on MWC this year,” proposes tech blogger Emma Martin, “just look around at the number of booths that offer attendees a chance to try on a headset for virtual reality product demonstrations, gaming experiences, marketing pitches, and entertainment opportunities. They’re going to be everywhere.”

VR Rumor Roundup

Samsung has already confirmed its intention to unveil new smartphones at MWC. But it’s the South Korean tech giant’s plans for virtual reality that are generating the most speculation.

Citing sources in the European tech channel, Jamie Feltham of VRfocus says that pre-orders for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge may kick off during MWC with an alluring window of opportunity attached. According to the rumor mill, individuals who preorder one of the new smartphones before March 10th will receive a free Gear VR with their order.

In recent weeks, HTC has also been subjected to endless MWC rumors. Will HTC’s hotly anticipated One M10 make an appearance in Barcelona? Although the speculative chatter persists, it’s a safe bet that HTC will keep the wraps on its refreshed flagship smartphone until spring as the company opts instead to focus on virtual reality at MWC. Sources attest that one of HTC’s highest priorities for the Congress is demonstrating the company’s virtual reality expertise and passion.

“The Taiwanese company is not holding a press event at MWC, but will be attending to showcase the latest version of its virtual reality platform Vive Pre ahead of pre-orders opening on February 29,” says Rhiannon Williams of the U.K. Telegraph.

Virtual Reality Comes to Mobile Advertising

Mobile advertising will formally enter the age of virtual reality in Barcelona when Airpush rolls into Mobile World Congress to officially launch its virtual reality ad network called VirtualSKY.

While most attention on VR last year was directed at hardware, the latest industry estimates suggest that VR will reach $4.7 billion in sales of software as soon as 2018. To help both VR content creators monetize their work and give advertisers the access they’ve been clamoring for inside of VR headsets, Airpush is the first major mobile advertising powerhouse to embrace VR to this extent.

Visitors at Airpush’s booth will be treated to Gear VR demos of the platform in action. VirtualSKY, the company says, has been “designed from the ground up to deliver gorgeous, immersive, virtual reality advertisement experiences from the world’s top brands and advertisers into virtually any VR app.”

Nokia Taps VR for 5G Push

Nokia will present at Mobile World Congress its vision for 5G. And it will tap the power of VR to make its case.

Claiming to have already tested a blazing 5G connection marked by download speeds of 30 gigabits per second (that’s about one thousand times faster than a typical 4G experience), the company will pull out all the stops to showcase in Barcelona the dramatic impact upon the world that 5G’s advent will yield.

“In a demo that could combine the high speed and the low latency being sought for 5G, Nokia plans to let attendees play catch using only VR to watch each other and the ball,” explains PC World‘s Stephen Lawson. “A VR system will track the positions and movements of two players and of the ball they’re tossing back and forth. When you’re counting on a wireless network to tell you where a ball is so you can catch it, low latency is critical. Nokia will be betting its 5G prototype has what it takes.”

Apart from the VR-focused demonstrations set to take place throughout the convention hall, virtual reality is also expected to feature prominently in some several of the keynote speeches scheduled during the four-day conference, including remarks from Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The 2016 Mobile World Conference spans February 22-25 at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain.

From Citizen Kane to Citizen Developer 76 Percent of Users Identify as App Developers“Not too many business users (accountants, accounting managers, financial execs and the like) really know how to program in Java, Ruby, C++, or how to work within a .NET framework. But yet, technology skills are so important to them that 68% consider “developing apps” to be part of their daily routines.”

That’s the take from a recent ZDNet report, which explores the emerging world of the “citizen developer.”

ZDNet’s story is in part based on one of the findings from Intuit QuickBase’s latest survey of 148 of their customers. Turns out 21 percent self-identified as IT developers, and 76 percent as “citizen developers.”

In sum, though a mere eight percent understand programming languages and development platforms, a good majority “are involved in some way building apps, at least at the front end.”

What kind of apps? Of course, they’re business-related, from “get-the-work-done” apps (65 percent) to “run-the-business” apps (42 percent).

“The bottom line: it’s one less thing for IT to worry about,” notes ZDNet. “Plus, IT professionals are not being left out of the process either, the study’s authors point out. The majority (75 percent) of IT builders indicated that they developed over three quarters of the applications and leave the last mile to their non-coder citizen developer colleagues. In fact, it’s this prototyping process between IT and the business that represents the paradigm shift.”

The report’s authors give kudos to the citizen developers working with their IT departments.

“As digital transformation continues to heap an ever-growing backlog of application requests on their doorsteps, using existing legacy applications and high priced IT professionals and coders is not sustainable. This is why organizations are starting to turn to internal resources, true citizen developers, who have been trained to solve business problems rather than learn programming languages.”

Avatar, an award-winning web development company that helps businesses strengthen their online brand with creative websites, cutting-edge apps, and reliable cloud hosting, believes so.

“Apps are quickly becoming more sophisticated,” said Todd Johnson, the managing director of Avatar’s web design team. “Creating a modern application requires knowledge in several technical areas, including mobile responsiveness, integration, security, user interface design, programming languages, backend databases, and more.”

Problem is — though most every business could benefit from a well-designed app — many business owners “believe that app creation is out of their budget.”

What to do?

For starters, costs are minimized when specifications are clear.

“Most business owners have a general idea of how their apps would function, but you need clear specifications before development begins,” according to Avatar New York. “This will reduce the production time, which can save you money, and it will prevent users from becoming frustrated due to poor performance.”

Also, proper identification of the “problems” the app will solve is essential.

“Whether it’s a racing game or a digital calendar, every application has a purpose,” notes the firm. “The problem that your app solves should be the basis of its design.”

An “MVP,” or minimal viable product, is a good start. It saves companies money by minimizing the development costs.

Last, but not least, it’s wise to take the time to locate a reputable developer.

“Many business owners make the mistake of choosing an app developer based solely on the price,” Avatar explains. “However, these low-cost apps usually feature outdated designs, and they may not even be compatible with certain mobile devices. These developers also have subpar customer service. Projects can take months to complete, and simple adjustments may take weeks.”
