China’s ZTE Entering Smartwatch Industry

China’s ZTE Entering Smartwatch IndustryNotwithstanding the slow growth of the smartwatch industry this year, hardware and software makers continue to hitch their wagons to the smartwatch star in hopes of mammoth growth in the coming years.

To that end, China’s ZTE is looking to bring a smartwatch to the Chinese market next year.

The device in the works is scheduled to be released sometime in the second quarter of 2014.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Monday, Lu Qianhao, head of the Chinese company’s handset marketing strategy, says ZTE’s
smartwatch “will offer technological features that are similar to existing products such as the Galaxy Gear, but will sell for lower prices as it tries to appeal to China’s cost-conscious consumers.”

“We are focusing on the mainstream market,” Qianhao says.

The same report notes that ZTE will first sell its smartwatch in China with plans to eventually expand into the U.S. and European markets.
